Live Virtual Sewing 101 // 2 Weeks // Starts March 13

When in doubt, start at the very beginning. This course is designed to give novice stitchers a comprehensive foundation in machine sewing. Students will graduate with the skills they need to make a project from start to finish, and will gain the confidence to begin tackling anything. Students will make two projects, a lined tote bag with a pocket and a face mask.

Skills learned:

  • Machine threading and operation: sewing straight lines, pivoting, backstitching, changing machine settings, troubleshooting
  • Fabric selection
  • Pattern layout, grainlines, and cutting techniques
  • Seaming and topstitching
  • Creating boxed corners
  • Making pockets
  • Attaching straps
  • Making pleats
  • Incorporating elastic
  • Incorporating a lining

Skill Level: Novice. No experience needed.

What you need at home: A sewing machine (new or used, modern or vintage is fine), all purpose polyester thread, scissors to cut fabric, bobbin (this should come with your machine), seam ripper & pins. These can all be bought on our amazon store.

Project materials INCLUDED: The materials for your class are included in your registration fee and can be picked up at our studio ahead of class or mailed to you for an additional shipping charge. Alternatively, you may choose to purchase materials on your own. When you register we will supply details for obtaining your class kit. These include:

  • Muslin practice squares
  • 1/2 yard of Medium to Heavyweight Non-Stretch Fabric
  • 3/4 yard of Quilting Weight Cotton for Lining
  • 1 spool of All Purpose Polyester Thread
  • 1 yard of Webbing for Straps
  • 1/4" Elastic
  • Mask Pattern
  • Bag Pattern

Virtual Class Info: This is a VIRTUAL CLASS hosted live on Zoom. Before your class, you will receive an email from the instructor with Zoom access instructions as well as the supply list and any other information you may need to participate. You will log in at the designated times, and the instructor will walk you and the other participants through each step of the construction process. We will record each Zoom meeting and you can re-watch any part of the class, so even if you need to miss part of the live class you can still catch up. All students may be expected to do up to an hour of extra "homework" in between sessions to stay on pace
