our students say...

  • "If I could leave a thousand stars I would! I've taken three classes with Butcher and I couldn't be more supportive of what they do and the instructors, they're all so nice and helpful and patient and thoughtful. The projects are great and I've been thrilled with everything I've made."
    - Stacey H.
  • "This is not just a class, it is a community! The instructors are very supportive. They spent extra time with me to adjust the pattern of my bag so that I would have a finished product I loved. They are also total pros. The things they taught I would never have learned from a manual or YouTube video."
    - Meghan W.
  • "Thank you for a great 101 class! I can't believe four weeks ago I didn't even know how to use a sewing machine but had dreamed about using one for my entire life. You took the intimidation out and made class fun and accessible."
    - Daniella
  • "Sewing 101 was a great experience! The classes are thoughtfully structured to build skills over a four week span. By the last week, I had gone from zero machine sewing skills to completing a lovely little bag. The environment is relaxed and extremely comfortable."
    - Kerry P.
  • "I took the Sewing 101 class based solely on reviews I read, and it was amazing! I can't say enough great things about the class, studio and my instructor. The class is designed to be extremely user friendly and the studio itself is beautiful with creativity all over the place!"
    - Stephanie C.
  • "I am a very avid sewer. Over the summer I took the shorts making class and most recently the pattern making class. Instructors easily accommodate and challenge everyone in the class. It was great to connect to other sewing folk, too."
    - Heather M.
  • "I love this place!! I drive from Harrisburg for classes because I enjoy it so much! Great teaching, stylish and accessible patterns, and an all around inspiring atmosphere! Both locations have a great aesthetic too. Nice work!"
    - Danielle C.

Learning how to fit patterns to your body is one of the most useful skills you can have in your toolbox as a sewist--there's nothing more frustrating than spending hours stitching up a pattern you're excited about in a beautiful fabric only to realize the finished product doesn't fit!  While fitting is an essential skill for creating a handmade wardrobe you can feel good about, it can be a difficult thing to master on your own. That's where we come in!

Join us for our new Sewing 401 class, where you learn the basics of fitting a pattern. You will choose (or we can offer suggestions) a dress or shirt pattern (men's or women's) and learn how to fit that pattern to your body using the muslin fit method and then how to transfer those fit adjustments to your pattern.

Please note this class used to be combined with Sewing 301: Advanced Construction, but is now a separate course. In this class you will focus your time on learning fitting techniques so that you can begin fitting your own patterns at home, whereas Sewing 301 will focus on advanced sewing techniques. This class assumes you will understand the construction techniques of the garment you choose, so please choose a pattern that is appropriate for your current skill level. In the case that your fitting process moves quickly, you can choose a second pattern for help with fit.

Skill Level: Advanced. You have made a few garments and understand general construction techniques. You can read size charts, cut fabric independently, and generally understand how sewing patterns work.

5 Weeks; 15 hours of instruction
